Cade Wright said she “loved every second” of her unexpected challenge for the National Games podium, after the Hongkonger narrowly missed out on a medal in an attritional women’s triathlon on Central Harbourfront.

The 22-year-old Wright finished fourth and delivered what she called an “outstanding, career-best swim” on the way to a time of two hours, one minute and 25 seconds, a shade more than two minutes behind winner Huang Anqi.

She acknowledged she had not been expecting to feature at the front, given she had one eye on Sunday’s mixed relay.

“I was aiming for top 10 … I’d spoken with my coach [Andrew Wright] about keeping something in reserve, because the relay is where we have medal potential,” she said.

“But it was very exciting. I was loving every second of being in medal contention.”

She entered the closing run leg in a small pack hunting down long-time leader Lin Xinyu, who would claim silver.
