Hong Kong cycling chiefs have revealed the riders they have charged with living up to the city’s proud National Games history.
With 23 medals since Hong Kong began competing in 1997, cycling is the city’s most successful Games sport. Wong Kam-po, who claimed five Games medals, won road race gold for Hong Kong’s only prize on their Shanghai debut 28 years ago.
At the 2021 edition in Shaanxi, cycling accounted for four of Hong Kong’s seven medals. One of those was individual road race gold for Ceci Lee Sze-wing, a dark horse back then but unquestionably the poster girl of the squad announced by the Cycling Association of Hong Kong, China (CAHKC) on Friday.
Currently in Perth for the team’s pre-Games camp, Lee will lead the Hong Kong charge from the outset. Despite Herve Dagorne, the head coach, saying he did “not want to put all my eggs in one basket”, getting the 24-year-old across the line first is likely to be the goal for the road race on November 9, the Games’ official start date. The flat Zhuhai course should suit Lee’s small and powerful frame.

Her five road teammates include reigning Asian Games road race champion Yang Qianyu and Chloe Leung Wing-yee, who has been attracting attention from elite trade teams after a pair of fine performances at last month’s UCI Road World Championships.
A natural climber, Leung acknowledged the Games route was “not suitable for me … so I will mainly support and hope to help the Hong Kong team win a medal”.
Yang, 32, who won 2017 Madison gold alongside Pang Yao, was also ready to sacrifice her own ambitions for Lee’s golden bid.
“I will strive to fulfil my role, whether the coach asks me to catch up [any breakaways] or help Ceci sprint in the final stages,” Yang said. “Even if I don’t place, it doesn’t matter, because this is my job.”
Vincent Lau Wan-yau, the Asian Games time trial bronze medallist in 2023, will spearhead a nine-strong men’s road team, with Mow Ching-yin, Chu Tsun-wai and Tso Kai-kwong among his most prominent colleagues.
Their 230km (143-mile) road race, which will visit Hong Kong and Macau between a start and finish in Zhuhai, is scheduled for November 8.
For five days from November 13, the action will happen inside Hong Kong Velodrome, where Dagorne has identified Chu as having omnium “medal potential” following a strong showing at July’s China Track Championships.
The Frenchman has challenged his team to match 2021’s four-medal tally, although Leung Hung-tak, the CAHKC chairman, has spied at least seven podium possibilities.
Chu has been picked for the track endurance events alongside Tso, Mow, Lau and Ng Pak-hang, who surged to scratch race victory for Hong Kong’s solitary gold from April’s test event.
On the same day as Ng’s success, Dagorne hailed a “turning point” for Lee after she went within a hair’s breadth of beating demon Japanese rider Yumi Kajihara in a gripping omnium.

Now she is gearing up to inherit the crown of Sarah Lee Wai-sze, the former queen of Hong Kong cycling, who added five National Games medals, including 2021 sprint gold, to the two Olympic bronzes she claimed in a decorated career.
Ceci Lee is prioritising gold in the omnium, while she is poised to link up with Leung in the Madison. Yang, Boey Leung Bo-yee and Kwan Tsz-kwan complete the women’s endurance team, while a further eight Hongkongers will feature in sprint events.
In mountain biking, Gary Lai Chun-kin, Heidi Yu Hoi-tik and the versatile Kwan have been chosen for the men’s and women’s cross-country races in Jiangmen on November 20.
