World champion fencer Ryan Choi Chun-yin has said he would rely on his characteristic brand of “craziness and consistency” to try to create a National Games “miracle”.
Choi celebrated his 28th birthday on Thursday by attending an unveiling of the medal designs for next month’s Games. The foilist has enjoyed a golden 2025, claiming the Shanghai Grand Prix title and Asian Championships gold before he became Hong Kong’s first fencing world champion in July.
“Honestly, I think it’s impossible to win again, but I thought the hat-trick was impossible, so maybe I can continue to create miracles,” Choi said. “If I get the quadruple, it would be crazy.”
World No 1 Choi said seeing the Games medals up close at a Kai Tak Mall 2 event, hosted by designers Chow Tai Fook Jewellery, made his birthday “more meaningful”.
“They have a unique design … only one of the medals I have is very pretty [the world gold], but these are as pretty,” he said.

“If I get one, it would be very precious, but no matter the design or colour, my goal is always the gold.”
With the 10,000-seat Kai Tak Arena staging the National Games fencing competitions from November 15 to 20, Choi was “really happy that my family and best friends can come to support me”.
“[If I won] I could immediately share the moment with them,” he said. “Many times this year, I couldn’t do that.
“Also, I know Hong Kong supporters follow me, even when there is a time difference to where I’m competing. I’d like to share my happy moments with them.”
Choi’s triple joy this year has provided a welcome antidote to “one of the biggest regrets of my career”: the city foil team’s failure to reach last year’s Paris Olympics.
“I want to qualify for Los Angeles [in 2028] and achieve my final goal of winning an Olympic medal, whether it’s individual or with the team,” Choi said. “It would make my career complete.”
Choi was part of Hong Kong’s 2021 National Games bronze medal foil team in Shaanxi.
He said this year’s competition would be “as challenging as World Cups”, and to some extent a step into the unknown.
“A lot of the [mainland] Chinese competitors are not active on the circuit, but they are very strong,” he said. “I have no information about them.
“Fencing is a combat sport and style matters a lot … I can only study them through asking others or watching videos from three years ago. But I will try my best and, hopefully, during the Games I can adapt.”
Left-hander Choi has become renowned for his own unusual style that, in his words, sees him “leap, crouch and charge forward”.
He said his approach was “a mix between craziness and consistency”.
“When I was younger it was only craziness,” he said. “When I tried to transform to consistency, my results dropped. Naturally, I am crazy, but you have to be consistent sometimes … or you make too many mistakes.”
Choi said his feats, and those of double Olympic champion and fellow Hongkonger Cheung Ka-long, showed “nothing is impossible”. “We’re not a traditionally strong region, but wherever you were born or how you started doesn’t matter,” he added.
“I hope the new generation can break through some of the old mindsets and think outside the box.”
“Hard work and passion will bring you to another level, keep being creative, don’t follow others and one day you will have your own success.”
After inspecting his metal prey, Choi planned to eat “some delicious food to make my birthday more colourful”.
“I might have a fine dining tasting menu, I’ll reveal it on my social media,” he said.
