Hong Kong table tennis pair Baldwin Chan Ho-wah and Yiu Kwan-to struck gold at the Fisu World University Games in Germany late on Wednesday.

On a day when Ryan Choi Chun-yin became the city’s first ever fencing world champion, the paddlers added to the Hong Kong gold rush as they triumphed in emphatic fashion in their men’s double final.

Having already overcome Japanese and South Korean opponents to reach the final in Rhine-Ruhr, they came up against another duo from Japan, Shunsuke Okano and Yuma Tanigaki.

They started the best-of-seven encounter confidently, taking the first three games.

Okano and Tanigaki then rallied to take the next, but that proved a minor setback for Chan and Yiu as they breezed through the fifth.

That completed their victory in a relatively swift 36 minutes, the Hongkongers prevailing 11-8, 11-4, 11-5, 8-11, 11-3.
