Hong Kong table tennis star stunned by ‘scary’ Las Vegas food prices
Doo Hoi-kem jokes she needs to win just to afford to eat out as players complain about tables, venue

Hong Kong table tennis star Doo Hoi-kem may live in one of the world’s most expensive cities, but even she was taken aback by the cost of eating out in Las Vegas.
In the casino capital for this week’s World Table Tennis United Smash tournament, Doo branded the food prices “scary” in a social media post on Wednesday.
The bronze-medal winning Olympian also questioned how much people in America must be earning when presented with a bill that included an 18 per cent service charge, on top of “exaggerated prices”.
It was the latest in a string of complaints surrounding the event, with China’s top players blasting the condition of the tables being used and the lack of air conditioning in the temporary venue, where temperatures have reached 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
But it was the food that prompted Doo’s complaint, and in a video with teammate Ng Wing-lam, she highlighted several issues they had encountered and joked she would need to win more just to be able to afford to eat.

“It’s the first time that I have been so reluctant and picky when ordering Japanese food, but I really couldn’t go for it,” she said. “I am now curious about how much people in the US earn per month.
