China’s Wu Yize backed to achieve big things after battle of world champions goes John Higgins’ way at Kai Tak Arena
Stuart Bingham tipped Wu Yize as arguably China’s biggest snooker talent to emerge since Ding Junhui two decades ago, after holding off the 21-year-old at the World Grand Prix in Hong Kong on Thursday.
Wu may have been denied a quarter-final place by Bingham’s 4-2 victory, but he earned the respect of a man twice his age as he reeled off successive century breaks to leave the Englishman scrambling.
Around 1,000 fans were treated to some free-scoring snooker at Kai Tak Arena during the afternoon session, before the evening session continued where it left off, albeit with slightly fewer present.
Bingham joined spectators in appreciating his opponent’s promise.
“You can see he’s very good in the balls,” the 2015 world champion said, adding that Wu was “probably China’s best since Ding, I would say”.
