Siobhan Haughey, Hong Kong’s most decorated athlete, was on Thursday still undecided over whether she would continue her swimming career, saying she changes her mind about it daily.

Uncertainty over Haughey’s plans raises the possibility of the city being without the four-time Olympic medallist for this November’s National Games, but the 27-year-old indicated that her future would be clarified by April.

In the build-up to December’s short-course world championships, Haughey said she would take a three-month break from the sport and return only if she felt her body could handle the rigorous training needed to remain at the top.

“[Usually] while I’m on a break, I still think a lot about swimming, or even when I’m not swimming, I still try to stay active and do different things,” Haughey said.

“This break made me realise that when I’m on a break, I should really, truly be on a break.

“I’m having a call with my coach soon to talk about what my plans are for the rest of the season or if I should retire, [and] if I continue, what will the training situation be like?
