Hong Kong set to stage fencing’s Kai Tak test event in May, could host FIE World Cup again
City aims to make this weekend’s Women’s Foil World Cup an annual thing, as date is set for pre-National Games test event
Hong Kong could become a regular stop on the international fencing calendar after local officials confirmed their intention to continue hosting the FIE Women’s Foil World Cup, which concluded on Sunday.
And as the city builds towards staging another high-profile fencing occasion, during this November’s National Games, the Post has learned that a pre-Games test event at the new Kai Tak Arena is planned for the end of May.
The arena, Kai Tak Sports Park’s indoor facility, will be the fencing venue when Hong Kong co-hosts the Games alongside Macau and Guangdong province.
Officials were confident of repeating this year’s World Cup event, held over the past three days at the city’s AsiaWorld-Expo. However, no deal has been signed with world governing body the International Fencing Federation (FIE).
“The FIE has the final say every year – they will decide who hosts it,” said Antonio Lam Hin-chung, manager of the city’s team. “There could be changes, but the stops are more or less the same each [year].
