Hong Kong tennis chiefs are looking at options for upgrading the government-owned Victoria Park venue with a view to staging better events, after learning the new Kai Tak Sports Park was not equipped to replace it.

Michael Cheng Ming-git, president of the Hong Kong, China Tennis Association (HKCTA), revealed his organisation was conducting a feasibility study on the Causeway Bay venue, examining whether and how it could meet requirements for hosting leading tournaments.

Cheng reiterated his previous verdict that Victoria Park Tennis Stadium needed a vital upgrade if Hong Kong was to compete with the world’s best sporting hubs.

“The government is aware of our work and that aspects of Centre Court, which was built in the 1980s, are no longer compliant with [regulations] set by the professional tour,” he said.

The venue hosted the Bank of China Hong Kong Open last week, and players were quick to praise the event. The women’s equivalent, October’s Prudential Hong Kong Open, won the WTA 250 tournament of the year award.
