The veteran of five Olympic Games told the Post that, while she has not retired from competitive sport, she has enjoyed the “different direction” life had taken after a break from competing following the Paris Olympics.

The 32-year-old previously said Paris would be her last Olympics and, after the qualification window shut, said she had raced her final 100 metres backstroke.

But she has now opened the door to a potential return should the organisers introduce new categories.

“It feels like life is kind of bringing me to a different direction, and there’s a lot of new things I’m trying, but I’m still swimming because next year … there’s the world championship in Singapore … and the National Games,” Au said.

“I’m not retiring … but I would never count on having to do another Olympics unless they have a 50 backstroke. But I will be continuing training for at least a good few years.”
