World No 1 snooker player Judd Trump has admitted that his Hongkonger girlfriend has been part of the reason for his revival in recent seasons.

The British player, who became a Hong Kong resident earlier this week through the city’s Quality Migrant Admission Scheme, also told the Post his relationship with Maisy Ma Hiu-ching, the Hong Kong figure skater and television presenter, was the “main reason” for him to opt to live in Hong Kong in the longer run.

“It’s obviously when you first meet someone and you’re very motivated,” said Trump, who was at Wynn Place for the four-day Macau Snooker Masters. “When I go home or go to see her, I don’t want to lose before I see her – I want to make her proud as well, I want my family proud.

“You have different motivations as you get older, like a family, girlfriend and stuff like that.”

Trump, who has 30 ranking tournament titles to his name, also lifted the lid on his romance story with former Hong Kong athlete Ma, which “really started again” at the start of this year.

“We met [at the 2022 Masters in Hong Kong] and stayed in touch a little bit – it was going to be very difficult to have a relationship being so far away,” he said. “This year we kind of met again and then from that moment, I tried my best to spend as much time as possible in Hong Kong to make it work.
