While thankfully no public money was ploughed into Friday’s game at Hong Kong Stadium, it still smacks of poor choices and a failure to understand what people want.

Too often over the past year events have been trumpeted as highlighting the city’s role as global sporting hub, when in truth most barely registered with anyone outside the venue where they’re taking place.

There is little sign of this changing in 2025, with Hong Kong hosting the IBF World Cup – that’s tenpin bowling for the uninitiated – in January, and the Longines Hong Kong International Horse Show the following month.

In contrast, this weekend, one of the biggest fights of the year is taking place in Saudi Arabia, and even Macau staged a UFC contest in November. These are events that move the needle globally, and we’re going to start with the former for our wrap of what happened while you were sleeping.
