Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open wins tournament of the year award in WTA 250 category

The ‘M’ Mark event claims the annual award ahead of 22 other WTA International Series events held around the world in its category

The Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open has been handed the tournament of the year award at WTA 250 level, at the Women’s Tennis Association’s Tournament of the Year Awards on Friday.

The ‘M’ Mark event, which was held at Victoria Park from October 26 to November 3, claimed the annual award ahead of 22 other WTA International Series events held around the world in its category.

It was also the second time the event has won the award, after first winning it in 2018.

“This award is the best recognition of the hard work of everyone at the association and particularly coming in a year that saw the launch of the Hong Kong Tennis Season, with our stated aim to further develop the sport of tennis in Hong Kong … while enhancing the city’s international status as the region’s premier sports and events destination,” said Michael Cheng Ming-git, president of the Hong Kong, China Tennis Association.

Players on the tour voted based on the tournament’s overall excellence in staffing and organisation, fan passion and dedication to the sport and its athletes, among other factors.

The results put Hong Kong ahead of other tournaments including the likes of Eastbourne, Prague, Osaka and Guangzhou.
