Hong Kong’s lacrosse chief says he is optimistic the city will continue to host the World Lacrosse Super Sixes for the next few years as the short format of the game prepares to make its Olympic debut in Los Angeles in 2028.
Raymond Fong Kong also revealed Hong Kong is set to face some “really tough” battles to qualify for the Summer Games, with sport’s world governing body expected to announce the tournament format and other details sometime next year.
“Canada and Germany are hosting the other Super Sixes, but World Lacrosse could be tempted to turn this event into a world tour series,” said Fong, the chief executive of the Hong Kong, China Lacrosse Association. “Japan is always a strong contender to host any events in the region despite its limitations, but I am optimistic [about retaining hosting rights].
“Whether there’s an expansion or not, our chances are good and I’d say we can expect a Super Sixes event in Hong Kong for the next few years until we reach the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.”
Lacrosse – in the Sixes format – will make its Olympic debut in four years, and Fong revealed Hong Kong was among those pushing for a larger participation field in the City of Angels.
“As of now, the talk has been of a field of six to eight teams [for the Olympics debut], but we are among those suggesting a further expansion to, say, 12 teams,” he said. “Even at 12 teams, the competition to secure qualification to the Games, for Hong Kong, would be fierce still.
“Lacrosse Sixes will also have its first World Championships in 2027, and regional qualifiers are expected the year before. The first World Championships could also be used to decide the teams for the Olympic Games.”

The three-day World Lacrosse Super Sixes, which will be held at the artificial turf pitches at the Wong Chuk Hang Recreation Ground and Aberdeen Sports Ground from December 13 to 15, is returning for the second edition after making its debut late last year.
Great Britain triumphed in both the men’s and women’s categories last year.
The men’s and women’s competitions next month will feature five teams each. Hong Kong, Germany, China, the Philippines and Japanese club Fogostealers will play in the men’s event, while the women’s tournament will see the hosts up against Germany, China, Team Kanto of Japan, and international team Global – which is made up of players from South Korea, United States and Canada.
Hong Kong will be sending a relatively younger women’s squad because of a clash of commitments with the team playing in the regular format.
The city’s women’s team is set to feature in the Asian qualifiers, which will be held in Queensland from January 6 to 11, for the 2026 World Championships.
“We don’t have enough time to train for both tournaments with the same team, though the general perception is if you play well in the Sixes, you won’t be bad in the regular format,” said Gemini Fan Tak-kwan, head coach of the women’s team.
“We don’t want our players to get injured before the qualifiers too, so we are promoting three new faces from the under-20 World Championships squad.”
Eight Asian teams will compete in Australia for four spots, with the top two teams of each group advancing to the 2026 World Championships in Japan. Hong Kong is in the same group as China, the Philippines and Australia, while Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and New Zealand complete the other group.
