Hong Kong cycling is in a transition period and building up for a “slow breakthrough”, two of the city’s best athletes to ever mount a bike have said.
Three-time Asian Games gold medallist Wong Kam-po said Hong Kong cycling was at a turning point as some of the city’s best moved away from competing and into coaching.
“It’s a turning point now, and I hope they can make a breakthrough,” Wong said. “I think, at this stage, we need to slowly break through. The results [in the past] have been very good, but it is a stage of transformation.”
Another former Asian Games gold medallist, Leung Chun-wing, who joined the Hong Kong Sports Institute as an assistant coach when he retired after the 2023 Asian Games, backed the cyclists to step up at next year’s National Games.
Hong Kong sent only one cyclist to the Paris Olympics in 23-year-old Ceci Lee Sze-wing.

Lee described her Olympic debut in the omnium event as an “intense and unhappy” affair as she finished 20th out of 22 riders before admitting she “didn’t know what I was doing out there”.
In the points race, the final event of the four-discipline competition, she failed to contest a single sprint.
Leung backed Lee to bounce back strongly from her Paris woes and compete for a medal in the women’s events at the National Games. He also said Tso Kwai-kwong, 22, and 2020 Asian champion Mow Ching-yin, 29, could challenge for a podium spot in the men’s team.
“Our biggest goal is the National Games [in 2025] because [cycling] events will be held in the Hong Kong Velodrome,” Leung said. “And then we have the Asian Games in Japan in 2026, and then we’ll be looking towards the LA Olympics.
“Ching-yin is not young, but he’s experienced and can challenge [for a medal]. He’s also the main leader we have, like a team captain.”
At last year’s Asian Games, Hong Kong’s only cycling gold came from Yang Qianyu in the women’s road race. Mainland China, on the other hand, won only one medal in road cycling events, when Xue Ming came second – ahead of Hong Kong’s Vincent Lau Wan-yau in third – in the men’s individual time trial.
Japan dominated cycling in Hangzhou, taking 14 of the total of the 60 medals on offer, including 11 golds. China got 16 but only four were gold, whereas Hong Kong won one gold, three silvers and two bronze medals.

As for Hong Kong’s young cyclists, Leung said he was impressed by the 17-year-old twin brothers Ma Yik-fei and Ma Yik-sin.
“They are different characters on the road. Ma Yik-fei is physically very strong, and he’s so good at sprinting. And Ma Yik-sin, he’s tactically very smart, and he knows how to think about his races, so I think they’re going to be a perfect match,” Leung said.
“We’re looking at nurturing a new junior team and a new generation of cyclists for Hong Kong.”
Leung has been coaching the Hong Kong team for about a year, and he said that although it was tough, he was enjoying the challenge.
“It’s not just planning their training; we also have to think about their future and how to nurture them and their personality. So it’s quite a challenging one, but it’s also quite interesting as well,” he said.
“After the Asian Games [in 2023], Herve [Dagorne] asked me if I wanted to stay on [as a coach] because I’ve been with the cycling team for more than 12 years.
“I have a lot of experience in international and Asian races, so I would like to give back to the sport that made me what I am today.”
