One of the world’s best breakdancing athletes will be in Hong Kong in March, when the sport’s Under the Lions Rock competition returns to the city.
Phil Kim, the world champion and a member of Red Bull’s BC One All Stars, will headline the event in Tsuen Wan on March 25.
Organisers hope Kim, who performs as B-Boy Phil Wizard, will help to “promote breaking in the city and also elevate Hong Kong to the world stage”.
Jessica Siu Yue-pui, a former vice-president of the Hong Kong DanceSport Association breaking division who has organised competitions around the world, said the event would be “my biggest yet”.
“Breaking will make its Olympic debut in Paris next year, so now is a good time to show Hong Kong people the best breakers around the world, and to let people know that Hong Kong has a lot of talented dancers,” said Siu, who competes as B-Girl Mirage.

Kim is presently second in the Olympic qualification list after his world championship win in Seoul last October, one of the ranking tournaments that athletes need to negotiate before the qualifying series in 2024.
“I’m really excited to have Phil with us because booking him these days is extremely difficult,” Siu, who is currently training with the national team in Korea, said.
A total of 200 competitors, both local and international, are expected to compete in the competition at The Mills Fabrica, with the invitation list also including 14-year-old Raine Kubota (B-Boy Ra1On) from Japan and Korea’s Jang Jikwang (B-Boy Vero), who finished 13th and 19th at the world championships respectively.
“It’s a competition open to anyone in the world,” said Siu, whose previous event in Hong Kong four years ago attracted 200 competitors from 10 different countries.
“The judges and coaches I bring here can offer coaching for the city’s squad.”

Kim Heon-jun, the head of the famous Korean B-Boy Jinjo Crew, who competes as B-Boy Skim, and Ishikawa Katsuyuki (B-Boy Katsu) from Japan have both confirmed their attendance and are expected to be judges at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Hong Kong has formed a team of 12 dancers, six men and six women, to represent the city in all Olympic ranking tournaments, with the next Breaking for Gold World Series event taking place from February 24 to 25 in Kitakyushu, Japan.
Tsang Tsz-wa (B-Boy Think), Sze Ka-yam (B-Boy C Plus), and Kwong Yik-sze (B-Boy Sosze) lead the men’s squad, while Chan Ka-yi (B-Girl Lady Little), Helen Ho Pui-yee (B-Girl Pui Yee) and Ng Sau-man (B-Girl Fifty) are the top three women.
With no Olympic ranking tournaments in March, Siu hopes more of the city’s best will sign up for the showpiece, with B-Boy Sosze already confirming his intention to take part.
