Hong Kong’s Ng On-yee has been knocked out of the British Open, but 11 mainland Chinese players stayed in the hunt and Ng’s mixed-doubles partner Judd Trump moved closer to becoming world No 1 before he heads to next week’s Hong Kong Masters.
No 2-ranked Trump has got off to a flying start in Milton Keynes, the same venue as last weekend’s inaugural World Mixed Doubles.
Having already defeated China’s Si Jiahui 4-1 in the first round, which included a clearance of 139 in the second frame, Trump saw off Scotland’s Dean Young 4-0 in the second round in just 61 minutes.
The 33-year-old will reclaim the top spot if he takes the British Open title and with it the winner’s cheque of £100,000.
“It would be nice to get to No 1 off the back of winning a tournament – that would give me an extra sense of achievement,” Trump said during a post-match interview with World Snooker Tour. “Any time you get to No 1 is special.”
Trump could displace world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan, who was knocked out in the first round by Switzerland’s Alexander Urenbacher on Monday.
On Thursday, Trump was set to take on another Chinese player, world No 75 Xu Si, in the last 32.
A total of 28 mainland Chinese and Hongkongers had competed for a place in the tournament’s main draw, with 19 of them progressing into the last 64 and 11 of those making it through to the last 32, including the world No 7 Zhao Xintong and the former world No 1 Ding Junhui.
But the hopes of the Hong Kong contingent have been dashed, with three-time women’s world champion Ng falling to a 4-1 defeat in the first round against Jordan Brown, the men’s world No 22 from Northern Ireland, and Andy Lee Chun-wai being beaten 4-0 by Yan Bingtao of China. Marco Fu Ka-chun, Hong Kong’s other representative in Milton Keynes, had already bowed out during the qualifying rounds.

Ng and Trump had missed out on clinching a place in the mixed-doubles final on Sunday despite having earlier mounting a comeback to seal victory over O’Sullivan and his playing partner – and fellow world No 1 – Reanne Evans.
After the British Open wraps up on Sunday, several of those involved – including Trump, O’Sullivan and Ng – will be among the eight players taking part in the Hong Kong Masters from October 6 to 9.
Arrangements being made for them on their arrival in Hong Kong remain a matter of uncertainty.
From Monday this week, the city discontinued its policy of compulsory hotel quarantine for incoming travellers, but it still requires arrivals to complete three days of medical surveillance, during which there will be limitations on their movements.
Masters organisers have been seeking approval for special arrangements for the players, their companions and the referees, totalling around 20 people. That approval could allow the players to practise during their first three days in Hong Kong.
The event will begin with a meet-the-players press conference next Wednesday, the day before the action starts at Hong Kong Coliseum. In the quarter-finals on day one, Fu faces Mark Selby and World Mixed Doubles winner Neil Robertson meets Zhao.
Matches between O’Sullivan and Ng, as well as Trump and John Higgins, will follow next Friday.
