World Athletics Championships: is Oregon in range for Tiffany Yue after her long jump record?
- Yue finally reaches target she set herself before the pandemic, as she breaks her own Hong Kong mark in Portugal
- Now she hopes to extend her stay in Europe to find the extra she needs to grab a World Championships berth
The 24-year-old recorded a jump of 6.49 metres in Lisbon on Friday – 18cm further than her own previous city mark of 6.31m.
It was enough to earn her second place at the Meeting Cidade De Lisboa, and now she is setting her sights on the United States, which will host the global event in Oregon next month.
“I’m pleased with the distance, despite the fact that it came later than intended,” Yue said. “It’s a goal that I worked on with [previous coach] Animo Chan and was aiming for at the 2019 World University Games.
“I broke the record then [with 6.31m], but it wasn’t as far as I wanted – this is the distance I actually wanted to jump in 2019. My technique wasn’t as consistent at that time, and then the pandemic struck.”
Yue has been at a training camp in Portugal under coach Rolf Ohman since early April, and has shown improvement in the three meetings she has competed in there since arriving.
She won two of those competitions and was second in the other, with one of the wins featuring a 6.40m leap – 9cm further than her then Hong Kong best – that did not count as a record because the wind speed was above the allowed limit.
