Hong Kong Olympian Siobhan Haughey shattered the 200m freestyle world record at the short course Fina World Swimming Championships in Abu Dhabi on Thursday night, grabbing the city’s first ever medal at the event in the process.
Haughey’s time of 1 minute 50.31 seconds easily eclipsed that of Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom, who swam a 1:50.43 at the World Cup in 2017.
The double Olympic silver medallist added a gold to her already impressive tally for 2021, and said 2021 has been her best year yet.
“I had to turn around and look at my time, because I heard everyone screaming and clapping and that’s when I knew I did it. It means so much to me and means so much to Hong Kong because it’s our first gold medal,” Haughey said after the race.
“I think it’s one of the best years I’ve had so far. Hopefully, it’s not the best year yet because I still want more good things to happen in the future.”
