Hong Kong’s double Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games silver medallist Siobhan Haughey helped her Energy Standard team to a hard-earned victory in the International Swimming League 2021 season opener.
Haughey was first up on the final day of the four-team meet in Naples, Italy, where she was swimming in the 100m freestyle.
The 23-year-old led all the way and touched home in 51.22 seconds ahead of teammate Sarah Sjostrom.
It was Haughey’s first win of the meet after she finished third in the 50m freestyle and second in the 400m freestyle on day one at the Piscina Felice Scandone.


Her 50m time of 23.75 seconds was a new Asian short course record and an improvement on her own Hong Kong record.
She soon had a second win of the season when she came home in first place in the 200m freestyle.
Energy Standard ‘protect’ Hong Kong’s Haughey for ISL draft
The former University of Michigan swim star’s time of 1:52.88 earned her Energy Standard team 10 points to keep them ahead of the Toronto Titans, DC Trident and Aqua Centurions.
Haughey is the ISL record holder in the 200m free and this was her 10th win over the distance in the competition.
While her time was way off the Asian record she set in the ISL in 2020 she still finished a comfortable 1.1 seconds faster than Federica Pellegrini in second place.


Haughey’s final event of the meet was the 50m freestyle skins. She finished second in the first round in 23.91 seconds but was knocked out in the second round as she finished third in 24.40 seconds.
Teammate Sjostrom won the event to help Energy Standard to victory at the meet. The Swede was also named MVP.
The inaugural ISL champions, who finished second last season, topped the standings on 511.5 points, ahead of Toronto on 496.5 points.


The Aqua Centurions finished on 442.5 points while Haughey’s former team the DC Trident, for whom she swam in the 2019 season, were last on 311.5 points.
This season’s ISL takes place in Naples, Italy because of the Covid-19 pandemic. There will be 11 regular season meetings before the competition moves to the Netherlands for the semi-final stage.
Energy Standard and last season’s winners the Cali Condors will not meet in the regular season.
