Hong Kong’s mixed doubles badminton players said they were inspired by Siobhan Haughey’s swimming silver medal before their quarter-final win at the Musashino Forest Park Sports Plaza on Wednesday.

“I think it’s very encouraging, the feeling in the village is really good, everyone is just helping get each other up, the environment and excitement has helped us even more,” said Tse Ying-suet, one of Hong Kong’s flag-bearers at the Opening Ceremony.

“Hong Kong has done really well do get two medals, so it’s really encouraged me to want to work for Hong Kong’s third.”

The first of those was fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-long’s gold in the men’s individual foil on Monday night, which Tang Chun-man confirmed the duo watched.

“Just so exciting, we were in the village watching [Cheung] on the TV, you could feel that people were supporting it and the feeling was so really good,” he said.

Standing in the way of the Hong Kong pair are the Chinese No 1 seeds Zheng Si Wei and Huang Yaqiong. The world No 1 duo beat Indonesia’s Praveen Jordan and MD Oktavianti, the fourth seeds, in their quarter-final contest.
