Cyclothon could be latest Hong Kong sporting event to be cancelled because of the ongoing protests
- Organisers are keeping the Hong Kong Cycling Association in the dark as to whether annual event will be held in Tsim Sha Tsui East promenade or not
- The cycling showpiece could be the latest in a growing list of sporting events to be cancelled in the city because of the social unrest
The Hong Kong Cyclothon is in danger of becoming the latest international sporting event to be cancelled because of the ongoing protests in the city.
The annual cycling event incorporates the Hammer Series that features some of the world’s top cyclists and is supposed to be held along the Tsim Sha Tsui East promenade together with two races for local riders on October 13.
But the Tourism Board, organisers of the event, have not made it clear as to whether the event, first held in 2015, would go ahead as planned. They have not even listed it in their calendar of events for October, leading to speculation that it may be scrapped.
So far, several Hong Kong international events have been cancelled or postponed, namely the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open in early October and the Clearwater Bay Open, which was supposed to take place from October 17-20 at the Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club.
A source close to the Cyclothon organisers said preparation work for the cycling showpiece had been put on hold and an announcement was expected to be made this week.
