Denis Lynch had been trying to keep a lid on his excitement, playing down his chances in the Longines Grand Prix of Hong Kong even though he had led the competition early in the final round andthe first prize of US$132,000 had starting looming enticingly on the horizon.

All it took was the sound of a hoof clipping a fence to change all that.

Lynch’s arms shot to the sky and his face broke into a smile when he heard the noise and realised he could not be beaten, after a round on the 12-year-old Chablis that had clocked in at 39.35.

“I never see myself as a favourite,” Lynch said afterwards. “This is a new horse for our stable so I am over the moon. I’m just very, very proud of this horse.”

The Irishman had led the Longines Masters of Hong Kong’s marquee event right down to the point where there was only one rider left to go. But Swiss Pius Schwizer and About A Dream clipped the third last fence and the penalty that brought meant Lynch could not be caught.
