She turned to golf to help her out of a “slump”, found herself in the EFG Hong Kong Ladies Open within months and now Stephanie Ho Ngan-si is itching to reignite the career that made her so famous.
For the Canto-pop star, picking up her clubs again after an eight-year absence from serious golf was just what she needed after her professional life became stale in 2017.
“I was having a slump in my career after eight years so I wanted to find something that would make me feel confident again,” said Ho after carding a seven-over-par 79 at Fanling on Friday.

“I thought about golf because I have been doing it all my life and it turned out to be a good choice. Playing in the Ladies Close [in January] and getting here, it’s a great experience.”
Ho, 25, starts work on a serial for TVB Jade next week, but is eager to keep golf as an outlet.

“I’m going to work at a another job next week, so I guess the two will be going simultaneously,” she said.
“It’s a TV drama, I don’t even know the name yet. It’s about singing so I think it’s very suitable for me because I love singing. I will just be myself, happy and bubbly.
“But I still feel pretty comfortable practising every day and getting back into the golfing life. I will definitely try to play more.”
So keen is Ho to maintain her interest in the game that she is targeting a spot on the Hong Kong team for August’s Asian Games in Indonesia.
“I’m not planning anything really, I’m just playing and want to see where it gets me. I would like to play in the Asian Games, but it really depends on how I play this week,” she said.

“Hopefully tomorrow I’ll play better and that might give me a chance to play in the Asian Games. The last time I played was eight years ago [in China in 2010] and I didn’t really do that well, so I want to do better.”
Ho was out of sorts in Friday’s opening round, admitting the build-up to the biggest tournament of her life eventually took its toll.

“The nerves kind of got to me because I have been preparing for a really long time,” she said. “I really expected to do my best and when I didn’t, I put a lot of pressure on myself. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.
“I was so sad today, I was actually going to cry because it was so disappointing. I had a really disappointing back nine.”

That back nine saw Ho register two double bogeys and three bogeys to go with her single birdie for the day on the par-five 14th after she made the turn at just one over.
Local star Tiffany Chan Tsz-ching – who is best friends with Ho – finished with a three-under-par 69, two shots behind a leading pack of four that includes South Africa’s Connie Chen and Malaysian Winnie Ng.

Chan went one over on the front nine before carding four birdies on the way home to surge into contention, with birdies at 17 and 18 ensuring she takes plenty of momentum into the second day.
“I think I still have a little jet lag, I felt a little sleepy on the back nine but I managed to keep calm and focus,” Chan said.
