Kitchee crowned champions of inaugural Hong Kong Premier League

Despite drawing 3-3 with Wofoo Tai Po, they cannot be caught by their nearest rivals Eastern

Kitchee were crowned Hong Kong champions after a thrilling 3-3 draw with struggling Wofoo Tai Po yesterday.

They became the first BOCG Life Hong Kong Premier League winners, earning 36 points from 15 games with one match left. Second-placed Eastern are on 33, but even if the two teams finish equal on points, Kitchee take the title because of their record against their rivals.

Kitchee lost 3-1 to Eastern in their first match, but won 4-0 in the return encounter.

The Kitchee team celebrated with sprays of champagne after the final whistle.

Kitchee's first-season coach, Jose Molina, was a happy man.

"I feel very good," said Molina, "I am satisfied with the performance. The most important thing is to win the title. I want to thank the team, we worked together so hard for 11 months.

"I think the aim of football is always to win titles. It's good that we have two titles now, and possibly one more [the FA Cup] coming up."

Yesterday's match kept fans on the edge of their seats at Tai Po Sports Ground with Kitchee seeking the title and the home side trying to avoid relegation.
