Tiffany Chan Tsz-ching acknowledged that life on the tour treadmill had “got to me sooner than expected” and forced a mental and physical reset back in Hong Kong.
After rocketing to prominence when she qualified for the 2016 Olympics, at 22, Chan became the first golfer from the city to acquire LPGA Tour membership the following year.
Currently down at world No 723, the 32-year-old said she was still wrestling with the expectations that have trailed her for the past decade, and that she reached the end of last season craving a break.
“Last year was my 10th on tour, and body and age wise it was getting to me sooner than I expected,” Chan said.
“It’s nothing too serious; I was mentally tired ... I changed my usual off-season routine to spend time at the Hong Kong Sports Institute for training, and for support from physios and doctors to get my body feeling better.
“This will all help me be a better player in 2026.”

Last year, Chan missed the cut in all three of her LPGA Tour events, while she hung around after the opening two days in five out of 15 tournaments on the second-tier Epson Tour.
The USA-based Chan, who entered the world’s top 200 back in 2021, said she felt comfortable with her “technique and game”, but that “results for the past two years have not met my expectations”.
“I’ve been mentally and physically tired from travelling, and being at tournaments Tuesday to Sunday,” Chan said. “Now, I’ve built more muscle and endurance, which will help me with the travel and playing time.”
In 2016, Chan won the Hong Kong Ladies Open as an amateur, then finished 37th on her Olympic debut in Rio.
She said that managing the subsequent expectation and attention was “still a part I need to work on”, but that she had grown more discerning when offered advice.
“I’ve grown up listening to too many opinions … but in my 10th year I’ve learned to know when to take input,” Chan said. “I needed to figure out what to focus on.”
To help that process, Chan writes a journal, “assessing what helped my game … whether or not the result showed it”, and she has committed to “playing for myself, not for others”.
“A lot of eyes are on me and how I play but in this period, as long as I do what I planned … I’ll be happy,” she said.
“When I put the clubs away and retire, I want to have no regrets.”

Chan, who was talking to the Post as part of the Jockey Club Sports Plus Elite Athletes Community Programme, acknowledged that it was “hard to get away” from a sport she “loves so much”.
“I do a lot of meditation, and I need to find some hobbies … but I’m yet to do that,” she said.
With a golf fanatic dad, Willy, and a boyfriend in Aaron Chu who is her caddie, Chan often spends her downtime on the course. “In the past, I’d be trying to maintain my practice, while social golfing,” she said.
“I’ve learned that I should enjoy the views, and the time with my family and friends, instead of asking myself why I hit a certain shot.”
Chan, who graduated from the University of Southern California in 2017, and had her rookie LPGA Tour campaign the following year, is set to return to the US over Lunar New Year next month.
She will begin her season in Florida in March, playing three Epson Tour events in as many weeks.
“I’ll spend time with my old college coach, then go out to play,” Chan said. “The season will be packed, and I’m really looking forward to getting some good results.”
