LIV Golf Singapore: Joaquin Niemann wins easily while Fireballs make history in team event
Chilean seals second title of season at Sentosa Golf Club, as Fireballs threaten to run away with team title after third straight win
Joaquin Niemann took LIV Golf Singapore at a canter on Sunday, but not even the Chilean’s performance could douse a Fireballs team who are already threatening to run away with the team title.
Sergio Garcia’s quartet carded a combined 10-under-par to finish on 22 under, three shots clear of Legion XIII, and became the first team in LIV’s short history to win three tournaments in a row.
David Puig led the way with a five-under 66 leaving him fourth overall at 10 under, and with Luis Masaveu and Abraham Ancer shooting 68 and 69, respectively, Garcia had the luxury of posting an even-par round of 71.
“I’m super proud of the way they played and what we’ve been able to achieve,” said Garcia, who took the individual title in Hong Kong last week. “I wish I could have finished a little better, but that’s the way it goes.”
Over the past three events - Adelaide, Hong Kong and Singapore - Niemann is the only one to have rained on the Fireballs’ parade. He denied Abraham Ancer in Adelaide last month, and was well clear of the field at Sentosa Golf Club by the time he reached the turn, having birdied five of his first eight holes.
A six-under par 65 took the 26-year-old to 17 under for the tournament, five shots clear of Brooks Koepka, who also carded a 65. Ben Campbell finished third on 11 under.
