LIV golf boss Greg Norman would not be surprised if Hong Kong saw a little bit of history when the team competition comes to the city next month.
Days after Joaquin Niemann shot a 59 at LIV’S first event of the year in Mayakoba, and Wyndham Clark managed a 60 at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Norman said the Chilean could have finished with a 57.
No stranger to Hong Kong Golf Club, Norman the city’s Open in 1979 and 1983 on the composite course that will be used in March for the first LIV event in the city.
The course record is the 61 Aaron Rai shot during the second round of the 2018 Hong Kong Open, which he went on to win for his first victory on the European Tour.
And with the likes of Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson and Cameron Smith all playing, Norman said a “59 was gettable” when the 13-team competition makes its first stop in Asia this year.
Niemann’s first round in Mexico was the 18th time a golfer competing on one of the world’s leading professional tours has carded that score or better since 2010, and it was the second in LIV Golf after Bryson DeChambeau’s 58 at Greenbrier last year.
