China’s under-16 women’s team moved into second place at the Montaigu Football World Cup after a 2-1 victory over hosts France on Wednesday, their second consecutive win in the six-team tournament.
Zhou Jintong and He Fengqingyang both scored as the visitors triumphed at the Stade Maxime Bossis.
China took the lead in the 15th minute when Zhou curled a free kick into the top corner.
They doubled their advantage in the 45th minute after He controlled a long pass in the box and scored with a shot on the turn.
France narrowed the gap in the 73rd minute when Maelys Leduc converted a penalty.
There was a bit of controversy after the final whistle, with the French players protesting to the referee and then walking off the pitch refusing to shake the hands of their Chinese opponents.

After waiting for some time, the Chinese players eventually shook hands with the match officials.
The result leaves China with two wins from two matches in the tournament, having scored three goals and conceded one. They currently sit second in the standings behind Japan, who are also unbeaten.
In the other matches on Wednesday, Japan beat England 1-0 while Mexico defeated Portugal 3-1.
The invitational tournament, held from March 30 to April 6, features China, England, France, Japan, Mexico and Portugal.

The women compete in the Brioches Fonteneau Women’s Nations Challenge, which is played in a format inspired by the Uefa Champions League, with each of the six teams playing three group matches, after which they play a final placement match.
China beat England 1-0 in their opening match on Monday and will face Mexico on Saturday in their third group match.
On the same day, France face England and Japan take on Portugal.
