Even the best in the business need a dressing down sometimes, and Arne Slot let his Liverpool team have it after they went in at half-time 1-0 down at home to basement dwellers Southampton on Saturday.

The Dutchman, who was watching from the stands as he served the last game of his touchline ban, said he did not “give them compliments, I can tell you” after Will Smallbone gave the visitors a shock lead at Anfield.

Whatever was said, plus the introduction of Harvey Elliott, Andy Robertson and Alexis Mac Allister, had the desired effect, and two Mohamed Salah penalties after Darwin Nunez’s equaliser ensured normal service was resumed.

“The manager was like going for us – but that’s something you need sometimes. Because first half, the game was sloppy,” Salah said.

Victory sent Liverpool 16 points clear of Arsenal, who have two games in hand, starting with Manchester United on Sunday.
