Pivotal moments in sport occasionally creep up on you, when in hindsight you can look back and say “yes, that was when everything changed” – Sunday in the Premier League was not one of them.

Instead, we got the end of two eras in Manchester, both of which have been coming for some time and both entirely expected. In the red half, Marcus Rashford has finally completed his loan move away from Old Trafford, while United’s neighbours are experiencing what it’s like for the mortals of the footballing world.

Defending champions they may be, but Pep Guardiola’s team are no threat to the new order, and after a 5-1 humbling at Arsenal the only question is how bad it will get between now and the end of the season.

For evidence of what can happen when a kingdom falls, the Spaniard just needs to glance across the road, and the only thing United fans can cling to after a pitiful 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace is that should relegation come it won’t be at the hands of their former hero.

Rashford’s new side, Aston Villa, are United’s final opponents of the Premier League season, but the terms of his move mean he won’t be filling the role of Denis Law.
