Hong Kong footballer Anson Wong has a fan in government. Now he aims to ‘hammer’ Guangdong
The midfielder, who has ‘no doubt in ability’, is targeting Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup success to turbocharge his career
After earning praise in government circles following last week’s Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup first leg, Anson Wong Ho-chun hopes to gain another fan in Wednesday’s return match at home: the city’s head coach Ashley Westwood.
Wong has two Hong Kong caps, following a debut against Malaysia in 2023, but has not featured in a senior squad since he played 73 minutes of last June’s 0-0 World Cup qualifying draw in Turkmenistan.
The 22-year-old is enduring a difficult season with club team Eastern, too. His campaign reached its nadir on January 12 when he was withdrawn midway through the second half of a game at Football Club, after being introduced as an early substitute.
Three days after that low, Wong delivered a disciplined and tenacious display in the heart of midfield, as a Hong Kong side drawn largely from under-23 players were held 1-1 in Guangzhou.
After watching the match, Rosanna Law Shuk-pui, Hong Kong’s secretary for culture, sports and tourism, identified “hard-working” Wong and goalkeeper Ivan Ng Wai-him as the city’s stand-out performers.
“I was a bit shocked, but I don’t think about these things too much, I just try to enjoy the football I play,” Wong said ahead of Wednesday’s clash at Hong Kong Stadium. “It was a memorable night, but it was just half of the match. We want to hammer them at home.
