Exhibition matches in pre-season are always a bit hit-and-miss in terms of whether teams bring their big guns, or the second string, but on Tuesday Spurs extended captain Son Heung-min’s stay with the club until at least 2026, so there’s always hope.

That news came 24 hours before the London club try to live up to Ange Postecoglou’s boast about always winning trophies in his second season, and hours before rivals Arsenal’s League Cup semi-final against Newcastle, which is where we’ll start today’s look at what happened while you were sleeping.

Isak, who has scored 10 goals in his past nine games, struck shortly before half-time in the first leg of the semi-final at Emirates Stadium and then had a big role in Anthony Gordon’s goal after the break.

Arsenal had 22 shots on goal, only three of which were on target, and missed several good chances. Gabriel Martinelli hit the post in the first half, and Kai Havertz missing an absolute sitter in the second.

Newcastle, who have not won a major trophy since 1955, will now be clear favourites to complete the job in the second leg on Tyneside next month. Tottenham Hotspur host holders Liverpool in the first leg of the other semi-final on Wednesday.
