Hong Kong’s most promising football prospect, Ng Yu-hei, has agreed to quit local Premier League club Eastern for a move to mainland China.

Ng’s star has been on the rise since he made his professional debut in October 2023. The 18-year-old winger won his first international cap in September last year and, this season, he has illuminated both Hong Kong’s top flight and the AFC Champions League 2.

Speculation over Ng’s future heightened after he scored a wonderful solo goal for Eastern against Japanese heavyweights Sanfrecce Hiroshima last month, but the winger poured cold water on transfer rumours when he told the Post that to succeed abroad he needed to be “more consistent and in better physical condition”.

Nonetheless, Roberto Losada, Eastern’s head coach, urged Ng to “get out of Hong Kong” to maintain his progress, and the player has ultimately taken his boss’s advice.

Ng’s exit is unlikely to be confirmed until later this week, but the Post has been told he will join Chongqing Tonglianglong of China League One.

All four of the teenager’s Hong Kong appearances have come off the bench, although he played the second half of last month’s East Asian Football Championship qualifying victory over Guam.
