Mourinho sees red in United draw, Felix on fire for Chelsea, Messi paid more than Montreal
Spurs and Ajax also win as Europe’s second and third tiers take centre stage, while Saudi Arabia part ways with boss Roberto Mancini
It’s a little early in the Jose Mourinho managerial cycle for the Portuguese boss to be laying the groundwork for a departure, after all he hasn’t been with Fenerbache for two years yet, so maybe Thursday’s antics were just his usual headline grabbing.
Tiresome does not even come close at this point, but his team are still in the mix, unlike former side Manchester United, who continue to bumble their way through the season.
And whether you have become jaded by all the European football played nowadays, there is some magic left, with Welsh champions, The New Saints, making a little bit of history while you were sleeping.
Mid-table mediocrity
In a surprise to absolutely no one, Jose Mourinho was sent off as his Fenerbache side drew 1-1 with his former club Manchester United in the Europa League.
Christian Eriksen put United ahead in the 15th minute with a powerful first-time shot from the edge of the area, and United goalkeeper Andre Onana pulled off a stunning acrobatic double save just before half-time to deny the dominant hosts.
Youssef En-Nesyri equalised four minutes after the break, and Mourinho was shown a red card just before the hour mark after a heated dispute with French referee Clement Turpin over a penalty that wasn’t given. Apparently there was some pretty colourful language involved.
United, who had Antony stretchered off, have three points after drawing their opening three games in the competition, leaving them in danger of not reaching the next stage.
Felix on fire
Joao Felix ended his goal drought with a brace as Chelsea powered to a 4-1 win against Panathinaikos in the Conference League.
