For most football fans, a two-week break from the English Premier League after just three fixtures is one of the most infuriating parts of the game, next to failing to beat the first man from a corner or a lengthy VAR check.

But the wait is almost over as the competition resumes on Saturday at 7.30pm (Hong Kong Time) with Southampton against Manchester United.

And the return of domestic football means only one thing, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are busy with wildcard drafts, transfers and team selections.

Gameweek 3 review

In what may well turn out to be a case of pride coming before a fall, I had my third green arrow in a row with a score of 93 before the international break, mainly thanks to Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (£15.2m), my captain, who scored 34 points and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) who got 17.

And a managerial pat on the back then for anyone, including yours truly, who opted not to sell Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze (£6.9m) and Newcastle’s forward Alexander Isak (£8.5m), who scored 10 and nine points, respectively. The hundreds of thousands of people who did are probably kicking themselves.

Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo (£5.6m) scored one goal and got six points in total after I brought him in for Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku (£6.2m).

We all make mistakes though, and the decision to drop Brighton striker Joao Pedro (£5.7m) proved to be a costly one, as he scored eight points for the second week in a row after hitting the back of the net in the 1-1 draw away at Arsenal.

For the record, Various Artists are bubbling along nicely on 251 points and are ranked 90,630 out of more than 10.1 million players.

Lastly, an honourable mention to Liverpool attacker Luis Diaz (£7.6m), who has scored 29 points in two weeks.
