Gareth Southgate has resigned as England manager after the defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
The former England defender had come in for significant criticism during his side’s run to the final in Berlin, where a late Mikel Oyarzabal winner consigned his side to a 2-1 loss.
Southgate took the role in 2016 following the dismissal of Sam Allardyce and has overseen a run to two European Championship finals as well as a World Cup semi-final.
At Euro 2020, England were beaten on penalties by Italy in the Wembley final.

“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” Southgate said in a statement. “It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.
“But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.
“My special thanks go to the back-room staff who have provided the players and me with unstinting support over the last eight years. Their hard work and commitment inspired me every day, and I am so grateful to them – the brilliant ‘team behind the team’.
“We have the best fans in the world, and their support has meant the world to me. I’m an England fan and I always will be.
“I look forward to watching and celebrating as the players go on to create more special memories and to connect and inspire the nation as we know they can.”
Southgate’s tenure started positively as he led the team to their first semi-final for 28 years at the 2018 World Cup, where they were beaten by Croatia, and followed it up with a first final appearance since 1966 three years later at the delayed Euro 2020.

England were knocked out at the quarter-final stage by holders France at the 2022 World Cup, and reached a first final on foreign soil at Euro 2024.
However, England were criticised for large parts of the Euros in Germany for their lack of attacking intent and, after a 0-0 draw with Slovenia in the group stage, Southgate had plastic cups thrown at him by some sections of the England support.
Before Southgate’s arrival, England had only ever reached three major tournament semi-finals in their history but the former Middlesbrough boss matched that tally in his four tournaments in charge.
Yet many have questioned whether Southgate’s safety-first approach was largely to blame for the failure to land silverware given the depth of attacking talent at his disposal.
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and former Chelsea boss Graham Potter are the front runners to replace Southgate, while Argentine Mauricio Pochettino is also in the mix.
Lee Carsley, who led England’s under-21s to success at the 2023 European Championship has also been mooted, with Southgate having also been promoted to the senior team from within.
