Hong Kong star Sun Ming-him completes move to Chinese Super League, rewarded for Asian Games and Asian Cup efforts
- Sun Ming-him has 25 Hong Kong caps and started against Iran at last month’s AFC Asian Cup finals
- The 23-year-old joins a handful of international colleagues on the mainland, and could make his debut on Saturday
Exciting Hong Kong talent Sun Ming-him has completed a transfer to Chinese Super League club Cangzhou Mighty Lions, ending the 23-year-old’s 2½ year stay with Eastern.
Sun attracted interest from the mainland after a series of excellent performances, in an unfamiliar left-back position, during Hong Kong under-23s’ run to last year’s Asian Games semi-finals.
He started the senior team’s 1-0 defeat by Iran at the AFC Asian Cup finals in Qatar last month. A tireless, uncomplaining worker, Sun neatly fits into Hong Kong head coach Jorn Andersen’s high-octane team.
He is more than a road runner, however, and last season his 14 goals made him top local scorer in the Hong Kong Premier League.
Ordinarily a forward, Sun was named as one of two of the city’s young players of the season, alongside Eastern colleague Anson Wong Ho-chun, and included in the Premier League team of the season. He scored in his final game for Eastern, a 1-1 draw with Southern on February 17.
Sun joins Cangzhou, situated in the mainland’s eastern Hebei province, ahead of the new CSL season, which begins on Friday, when Shanghai Port begin their title defence at home to Wuhan Three Towns.
