The head coach may have been the happiest of the approximately 6,000 present at Hong Kong Stadium as the city won Monday’s international friendly 10-0 – and he hopes to be celebrating again in a few weeks’ time.
Hong Kong will meet Bhutan in a two-legged opening-round tie on October 12 and 17 to begin the qualifiers for the 2026 global tournament. Andersen said that the fixture with Brunei, along with the one against Cambodia four days earlier, had served its purpose.
“We knew that before the Bhutan game, we had to play against opponents at the same level as Bhutan, and that’s why we chose these two friendly games,” the boss said.
“Of course, Cambodia are stronger than Brunei, this is clear. They were better technically, better physically and it was more difficult for us. But I’m very happy that we can take confidence from the [victory].”
