China’s new badminton chief has vowed to crack down on corruption and “purge industry chaos” after being appointed to replace two-time Olympic gold medallist Zhang Jun.
Zhang Jun, the former president of the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA), has not been seen for months after being accused in April of “serious violations of discipline and law”.
On Tuesday, the CBA said Zhang Xin – an official from China’s General Administration of Sport – would be the new president.
The governing body would, Zhang Xin said, “resolutely carry the fight against corruption through to the end, [and] draw lessons from these cases”.
He also said the CBA would “simultaneously advance the goal of ensuring officials do not dare, are not able, and have no desire to be corrupt”.
Last week, CBA vice-chairman Xia Xuanze and former vice-chairman and secretary-general Wang Wei were placed under investigation on the same day.

Xia, an Olympic bronze medallist in 2000, was placed under investigation for suspected “serious violations of the law”.
And just as Zhang Xin came in Tuesday, Xia was removed from his post.
In the statement announcing Zhang Xin’s appointment, the CBA also said it would “purge industry chaos, purify the industry ecosystem, reshape the industry image, continuously improve the sports integrity system and create a clean and upright environment for the development of badminton”.
Under Chinese President Xi Jinping there has been a widespread crackdown on officials, extending into sport.
China are a badminton superpower and consistently the most successful country in the sport at the Olympics.
With the next Games in Los Angeles less than two years away, the CBA said it would focus on the “central task” of preparing for that event and “build a team capable of fighting well and possessing an excellent work style ... and contribute greater strength to the development of badminton and the building of a sports power”.
