Hong Kong’s world-class fencers Cheung Ka-long and Ryan Choi Chun-yin will aim to write the ending they wanted first time around when they get their second shot at National Games glory on Wednesday.
The pair were hoping to face each other in the individual foil semi-finals on home soil on Sunday, with the winner going on to take the title, but Choi was knocked out in the quarters and Cheung lost the semi, having to console himself with bronze. They will join forces in search of a better outcome in the men’s team foil competition.
It is another big day for Hong Kong’s leading tennis player Coleman Wong Chak-lam, who will be in men’s singles semi-final action in Zhuhai.
And the city’s equestrian riders have one last chance to claim a medal in Shenzhen.
Here’s our guide to day 10 at the Games.

A medal – but which?
Hong Kong history is in the making after Wong beat Cui Jie of Beijing 7-5, 6-0 on Tuesday to reach the last four, setting up a repeat of his 2023 Asian Games meeting with Wu Yibing.
No Hongkonger had ever won a tennis singles medal at the Games before, but with no third-place play-off, Wong is guaranteed a bronze even before he plays his first point at Hengqin International Tennis Centre on Wednesday.
In the other half of the draw, fifth seed Jerry Shang Juncheng, who came from behind to beat top seed Bu Yunchaokete 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, will face Zhou Yi, after the No 4 seed stormed back to beat Zhang Zhizhen 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Cheung Ka-long, Ryan Choi
The city’s foil head coach Greg Koenig has said “my goal is gold” ahead of Wednesday’s men’s team event at Kai Tak Arena, featuring the city’s Olympic champion Cheung and its world champion Choi.
“I want the gold medal for Hong Kong for the first time,” the Frenchman said. “I’ll draw up a table and see who we will face, and then I will discuss with my fencers to speak about the strategy and the line-up.”
Koenig said Cheung and Choi would be “fully motivated”, while urging Leung Chin-yu to have more confidence.
“I told him if he makes a good fight, it’s perfect for the team, and if he makes a bad fight, don’t worry, because your teammate will be there.”
Show-jumping duo
Hong Kong’s hopes of claiming an equestrian medal from these Games rest on the jumping smarts of Jacqueline Lai Jing-man and Raena Leung Hou-ling.
Lai, a silver medallist in Liaoning in 2013, and fellow Hongkonger Leung begin their quest in round one of the show-jumping final from 8am in Shenzhen.
The second and concluding round is set to get under way from 3pm.
The city’s equestrian riders have had a barren past 10 days, and their wait for Games prizes dates back to Clarissa Lyra’s show-jumping silver in Tianjin eight years ago.
Hong Kong’s only Games equestrian gold medallist, Patrick Lam Lap-shun, the show-jumping champion in Shandong in 2009, was eliminated in Monday’s qualifiers, along with teammate Angel Chen.

Baseball’s top six
No medals on the table for Hong Kong’s baseball players, but they will begin their bid for a top-six ranking against Shandong at 2pm.
The city team claimed their first National Games victory when they overcame Sichuan last Friday, but three losses sent them into the scramble for the positions from fifth to eighth.
Win in Zhongshan this afternoon, and they will meet either Tianjin or Fujian, who beat them 5-4 on Monday, in a fight for fifth on Thursday. If they lose, it is a scrap for seventh with the loser of that Tianjin v Fujian match.
The semi-finals are between Jiangsu and favourites Shanghai, and Beijing and Guangdong.
Basketball semis
It is the penultimate day at Hong Kong Coliseum, where the city is hosting the men’s under-22 basketball, and we are down to the final four teams.
Guangdong take on Shanghai in the 5pm semi-final, followed by Shandong v Beijing in the other at 8pm. All are undefeated except Shanghai, who lost to Beijing in the group stage.
Hong Kong have already concluded their home campaign, ending on a winning note with a 109-105 victory over Fujian on Tuesday to finish ninth overall.
