Chinese diving starlet Quan Hongchan helped Guangdong successfully defend the women’s team gold medal at the National Games on Sunday, and moved a step closer to being her country’s best of all time.
The three-time Olympic gold medallist took part in the synchronised 10-metre platform alongside Wang Weiying in the evening session, with the pair outscoring their rivals to finish on top of the table with 235.86 points.
Chen Yuxi and Zhang Minjie, representing Shanghai, finished second just 0.9 points behind, with 234.96, while another Guangdong pair in Jiang Linjing and Xie Peiling ranked third with 229.26 points.
Helped by their supremacy in the day’s other three disciplines, Guangdong defended their crown ahead of Sichuan and Shaanxi.
A decorated diver with five world titles and a pair of gold medals from the Hangzhou Asian Games, Quan’s gold rush at the quadrennial event could continue on Thursday when she is scheduled to make her only other competitive start of the Games in the synchronised 10-metre platform alongside Wang.

Should Quan manage to secure the title, she would tie the legendary Fu Mingxia with four National Games gold, while closing in on record holder Guo Jingjing, who has six to her name.
With her home province co-hosting the Games alongside Hong Kong and Macau, Quan was making her first competitive appearance in 183 days at the aquatics centre at the Guangdong Olympic Sports Centre.
The 18-year-old from Mazhang, Zhanjiang, last competed in the World Aquatics Diving World Cup Super Final in Beijing in May, before withdrawing from the national championship later that month and the World Championships in Singapore in July.
Despite missing a couple of events home and abroad over the past six months, there were no signs of rust in Quan’s displays.
Quan and Wang ranked first in their first jump, a forward dive with 3.5 somersaults in a pike position, and their third attempt, a back dive with two and a half somersaults and one and a half twists in a pike position.
In the end, it was Quan and Wang’s opening dive that separated them from their closest rivals Chen and Zhang, with the two pairs receiving identical scores in their final two attempts.
In the morning and early evening session, Guangdong had already established an almost insurmountable lead with the first three disciplines.
Two Guangdong athletes or pairs had finished inside the top three in synchronised and individual 3-metre springboard, as well as individual 10-metre platform, even before Quan and Wang took it to the platform.
Chen Yiwen, who won individual and synchronised 3-metre springboard at the Paris Olympic Games last summer, was another hero for Guangdong, as she and Lin Shan topped the tables of the two disciplines with ease.
