Hong Kong’s beach volleyball players have called on local spectators to help them make the most of home advantage, and said that hearing Cantonese called from the stands would bring the “greatest joy”.
Beach volleyball competitions at the National Games start in the purpose-built Victoria Park venue on Friday and run until November 10.
Hong Kong have one men's and two women’s teams representing the city, and the players met the media at the new venue on Wednesday.
“Honestly, the greatest joy comes from hearing our native language cheering us on at every competition,” beach volleyballer To Wing-man said.
“When we first started competing … we wanted to invite family and friends, but the venues were often too far away.

“This time, it’s a rare chance to compete on home turf in Hong Kong … we can invite family and friends to come. And Causeway Bay is so convenient.”
To competes with her twin sister, To Wing-tung, and sitting at No 262 in the world, they are the only pairing of Hong Kong’s three teams listed on the FIVB rankings.
The competition for medals in the women’s event will be fierce, as China have eight players ranked inside the top 100.
Hong Kong’s men are not listed in the world rankings, but 14 Chinese players are.
“This marks my first time taking part in the National Games, and what’s more, it’s on home turf in Hong Kong,” men’s player Tse Kin-wang said.
“I think it’s actually one of the most significant milestones in my life.”
Victoria Park hosted a beach volleyball test event in April, and Yeung Tak-keung, head of the National Games Coordination Office in Hong Kong, said significant improvements had been made.

“Here at Victoria Park, we’ve erected seven venues, including our main pitch, secondary pitch, warm-up area and training ground,” Yeung said. “The layout encompasses spectator stands, athlete zones, media interview areas and so on.
“This Victoria Park venue represents Hong Kong’s largest and highest-standard beach sports facility to date. We’ve implemented the highest specifications and athletes have already arrived in Hong Kong.”
Yeung said that more than 50 teams from various provinces and municipalities were already in the city. He added that the whole venue could seat around 1,700 spectators.
