The Hong Kong government on Thursday released more information about mass participation events at this year’s National Games, in which citizens will be able to fight for the chance to represent the city across different sports.
The Games, which will take place in Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau from November 9 to 21, will include 23 mass participation events, of which Hong Kong will host one.
Hong Kong will host the bowling event, and trials for the men’s and women’s teams of five will take place on April 5 and 6 at Top Bowl Tenpin Bowling, located at Kai Tak Sports Park.
Mass participation events at the National Games will be divided into two categories: competition and demonstration.
Competition events will cover 19 sports, including table tennis, badminton, tennis, football, basketball and more.

Demonstration events will cover four sports: health qigong, tai chi, dragon and lion dancing, and broadcast gymnastics.
“The final events of various mass participation games will be held in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau from May to November,” a statement by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department said.
“Members of the public are encouraged to participate in the activities of the [Games] in welcoming the event to be held in November.”
Hong Kong’s national sports associations (NSAs) and relevant organisations will conduct free-of-charge athlete selection or objective technical tests to assess the skill level of those who aim to represent the city in mass participation events.
Information on how to participate in the events can be found by contacting each sport’s NSA.
The top three athletes in mass participation events will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals, while the top eight athletes will also be presented with certificates.
For demonstration events, there will be one first prize, three second prizes and four third prizes, and winners will be presented with certificates and medals.
All athletes who participate in the finals will be presented with e-certificates of participation.
Although it will host only one of the Games’ mass participation events, Hong Kong is set to stage eight of the 34 sports in the competition proper: fencing, track cycling, rugby sevens, golf, triathlon, beach volleyball, men’s handball and under-22 men’s basketball.
The new Kai Tak Sports Park – which has a 50,000-seat stadium, a 10,000-seat indoor centre and a 5,000-seat public sports ground – will host the handball, rugby sevens and fencing competitions.

Other events will be distributed across the city. The Hong Kong Coliseum will be used for basketball, Hong Kong Velodrome in Tseung Kwan O will be the venue for track cycling, Victoria Park for beach volleyball, and the golf event will be held at the Fanling course.
The triathlon will be held in and around Victoria Harbour, and Hong Kong continued its preparation for hosting the race with a test event on the harbourfront earlier this month.
In February, Kai Tak Arena hosted a handball test event watched by around 1,500 fans.
Also in February, a test event for the marathon, organised by the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, started and ended at the Shenzhen Bay Sports Centre. Runners entered Hong Kong via the Shenzhen Bay Port before passing over the Shenzhen Bay Bridge and Kong Sham Western Highway Viaduct.
Former triathlete Leanne Szeto Shiu-yan was the first Hongkonger to cross the line, finishing in two hours, 47 minutes and 20 seconds. Guangdong’s Chen Liqin won in 2:44:44, with Jin Linzhu, from Guizhou, second in 2:45:15.
