Wang Chuqin and Wang Manyu, second in the men’s and women’s world rankings respectively, claimed Asian Cup crowns in Shenzhen on Sunday.
Wang Chuqin swept fellow Chinese player Liang Jingkun 4-0 in the men’s final, while Wang Manyu denied world No 1 Sun Yingsha a victorious debut in the tournament, also winning in four games.
An aggressive Wang Chuqin dominated world No 3 Liang throughout, winning 11-7, 11-2, 16-14, 11-5.
“I didn’t disappoint you,” Wang Chuqin said to his vocal supporters. “I regarded myself as a challenger, not a favourite. So I kept fighting for each point.”
In the women’s final, Wang Manyu allowed little opportunity for top-ranked Sun, winning 11-5, 11-9, 11-6, 11-6 in 40 minutes.

“I have executed my strategy, and I wasn’t hesitant at all,” Wang Manyu said after the match.
Former world No 1 Xu Xin, who retired from international competition last year, said “it’s not a bad thing for an athlete to lose”.
“No athlete can keep winning in all competitions,” he said. “As for [Wang] Manyu, the win can allow her to gain confidence and eventually retrieve the feeling she used to have [at the table].”
A Weibo user from Jiangsu supported Xu’s comments, suggesting the “charm of competitive sports” was that there were both winners and losers.
“No one can win all the time so Shasha [Sun’s nickname] shouldn’t blame herself,” the comment read. “I felt that her play had been thoroughly studied – she might need to rip it all up and start again to do something different.”
Not all Sun’s fans kept their decorum, with some chanting her name and shouting “you’re still the best” during the presentation ceremony.
Wang, who has now won gold medals at Asia’s three big tournaments – Asian Games, Asian Championships and Asian Cup – also responded to the reaction of the fans at the Shenzhen Universiade Sports Centre.
“I know difficult it is for so many of you to come here and support me and your other favourites for so many days,” she said. “I hope now your throats can heal.”
The 26-year-old from Heilongjiang dedicated her latest victory to the team behind her.
“From the preparation to playing, there were challenges every step along the way,” she said. “Thanks to the coaching team for their careful guidance, my teammates for their encouragement, and my fans for their company and support.
“This championship not only belongs to me, but also to everyone who works silently behind the scenes. Today’s results are an affirmation of past efforts, but they are also a new starting point. I will continue to work hard and constantly break through myself to strive for more glory for Chinese table tennis.”
