China’s flag-bearers Ning Zhongyan and Liu Mengting each topped the podium as the host nation triumphed in speed skating and freestyle skiing at the Asian Winter Games on Tuesday.
Having led their delegation into last Friday’s opening ceremony side by side, the pair delivered gold within minutes of each other in Harbin.
Speed skater Ning, 25, won the men’s 1000 metres just as 20-year-old skier Liu led a Chinese one-two-three in the women’s freeski slopestyle.
Later on Tuesday, Hong Kong’s men’s ice hockey team exited their tournament following an eventful few days.

Having on Sunday been attacked by Turkmenistan players at the end of a match, they had on Monday received a visit in the athletes’ village from John Lee Ka-chiu, the city’s leader, who expressed “the support of the Hong Kong people”.
They were outclassed 24-0 by Kazakhstan in Tuesday’s quarter-final, but their last-eight finish bettered Hong Kong’s performance at the 2017 Games in Sapporo, when the team finished ninth overall.
Ning’s gold-winning efforts at HIC Speed Skating Oval came with a new Asian and competition record, as he finished in one minute, 8.81 seconds. Cha Min-kyu of South Korea and Ning’s China teammate Lian Ziwen were second and third.
Meanwhile, there was a clean sweep for Chinese athletes in the freeski slopestyle. Liu’s first run of 94.00 remained the highest score of the day, ahead of silver medallist Yang Ruyi’s 90.50 and bronze winner Han Linshan’s 87.00.
The ice hockey quarter-finals represented a significant step up for Hong Kong’s players, a day after Chief Executive Lee praised their “outstanding performance” at the Games, which he said was “a source of pride”.
The Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China had also hailed the city’s team for “showing restraint and upholding the Olympic spirit” when Turkmenistan counterparts threw punches during post-game handshakes at the end of Hong Kong’s 5-1 victory on Sunday.
Ho Kit-fung, the head of the Hong Kong delegation at the Games, said he had been “deeply shocked and heartbroken” by the incident.
That result nonetheless sent the Hongkongers into the last eight. They had gone unbeaten in Group C, scoring 61 goals while conceding just two, even if Monday’s narrow 6-5 reverse to Kyrgyzstan in a quarter-final ranking match inflicted a first loss.

However, the Kazakhs were in another league altogether on Tuesday at Harbin Ice Hockey Arena and raced into an 8-0 lead in the first period. They scored seven times in the second period and nine in the third, with 11 Kazakhstan players sharing the 24 goals.
There were further golds for China’s athletes in both speed skating and freestyle skiing.
In the former, Han Mei emulated Ning by claiming gold in the women’s 1000m in front of compatriot Yin Qi and South Korea’s Lee Na-hyun.
China’s trio of Liu Hanbin, Wu Yu and Hanahati Muhamaiti then won the men’s team pursuit, with South Korea and Japan collecting silver and bronze.
The Chinese women’s team pursuit team proceeded to match the men’s achievement, as Yang Binyu, Ahenaer Adake and Han Mei finished first and the Japanese this time beat the South Koreans to second spot.
And in skiing, in the women’s aerials synchro final, Feng Junxi and Wang Xue took top honours, with China teammates Chen Meiting and Xu Mengtao placed second.
In the morning’s women’s curling, Hong Kong lost 9-3 to China in the round-robin stage. Chinese Taipei beat Qatar 9-5, Japan saw off Thailand 13-2 and Kazakhstan defeated Philippines 5-4. Hong Kong were later beaten 9-2 by Japan.
The Hong Kong men’s curlers overcame Qatar 10-2.
