Navarro, Halep win in Hong Kong, Sabalenka continues hot streak at China Open in Beijing

Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong also in Shanghai Masters action against Jerry Shang Juncheng amid flurry of Chinese tournaments

Top seed and world No 8 Emma Navarro came through two close sets to reach the last 16 of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis 125 tournament on Wednesday.

The American was tested by 96th-ranked Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland before overcoming her 7-5, 6-4 in the round of 32 at Victoria Park.

Also battling through was former world No 1 Simona Halep, as the Romanian prevailed 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 against Arina Rodionova of Australia.

Hong Kong’s Eudice Chong and Cody Wong Cody Wong Hong-yi bowed out in the last 16 of the women’s doubles, beaten 6-3, 6-2 by the top seeds, Ulrikke Eikeri of Norway and Taiwan’s Wu Fang-hsien.

Elsewhere, in the Shanghai Masters, Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong Chak-lam came up against China’s Jerry Shang Juncheng with Shang winning 6-4, 6-4.

Earlier, at the China Open, top seed Aryna Sabalenka won her 15th match in a row to power into the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Madison Keys.
