Controversial Olympic champion speed skater Lim Hyo-jun will not be able to compete for China at the Beijing 2022 Winter Games, according to a media report in his native South Korea.
Lim won 1,500-metres gold for South Korea at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, before choosing to naturalise as Chinese. However, South Korean broadcaster SBS reported his hopes of representing the hosts next February are over.
The Seoul-based media outlet cited an official at the Korea Sports Council saying there had been no contact from Chinese officials ahead of Friday’s preliminary long-list deadline.
“If you do not submit a ’long list’, it is virtually impossible to participate in the Olympics,” the official told SBS.

Lim, 25, has been a controversial figure in the sport after he was charged in 2019 with sexual harassment of a male teammate, for pulling down their trousers in front of female teammates.
He was banned for a year by the Korean Skating Union in August that year, and later found guilty of the charge which earned him a US$2,500 fine and 40 hours of court-mandated therapy.

The verdict was overturned by the Korean Supreme Court in June.
That ruling followed the six-time world champion’s decision to apply for Chinese citizenship in March, in the hope of competing for the hosts in Beijing.
However, it has been widely reported that Olympic policy states three years must pass between an athlete competing for different nations.

Lim, who also won bronze in the 500m event in Pyeongchang, last skated for South Korea at the ISU World Championships in March, 2019 – meaning he would miss out on being eligible to represent China at the Beijing Games by a month.
There are exceptions to the rule, the most notable being the three-year cooling off period can be overruled if the relevant national committees agree.
SBS reported that Chinese officials have made no contact ahead of the deadline. But the Korean Sports Council would be unlikely to accept any application, with South Korean publication Dong A-Ilbo reporting in March that the issue is a bone of contention.
“It will be difficult to allow [Lim’s participation in the Olympics] considering its impact on the Korean national team and the social sentiment,” an official told the daily newspaper.
