Tokyo 2020: Canada-born Nina Schultz dominates heptathlon at China Nationals test event

Naturalised Chinese heptathlete Nina Schultz dominated on the first day of a two-day test event ahead of China’s National Games.

The event is a warm-up for China’s track and field teams before the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which begin on July 23.

The heptathlete, whose grandmother was world record-setting high jumper Zheng Fengrong, took first place in all four events in Xian on Tuesday.

Schultz, who is also known by her Chinese name Zheng Ninali, has 3,718 points after day one. She won the 100m hurdles in 13.39 seconds to earn 1,069 points; her 1.82m in the high jump was worth 1,003 points; 13 metres in the shot put bagged 749 points; and her 24.49 seconds in the 200m was worth 897 points.

There are three more events – the long jump, javelin and 800m – at the Xian Olympic Sports Centre.. She has a huge lead over the other six competitors.
