Those mocking Andy Ruiz Jnr’s portly body shape are no longer laughing after his sensational TKO victory against Anthony Joshua – and Joe Rogan thinks the Mexican actually may have benefited from his “big belly”.
Ruiz became his country’s first heavyweight boxing champion with a shock seventh-round win at Madison Square Garden last Saturday night, claiming Joshua’s IBF, WBA and WBO world titles.
No one gave him a sliver of a chance against Olympic gold medallist Joshua, who is around five inches (12.7 centimetres) taller and in far better physical shape.
“If you do have great cardio, one thing body fat can do is it can protect you somewhat,” Rogan said on his podcast, the Joe Rogan Experience. “It’s like wearing eight sweaters.


“I’ve joked around about this before, because most of the impact goes there. But look at [UFC heavyweight champion] Daniel Cormier.
“You’re dealing with giant dudes who can f*** you up with one shot, there might be an advantage. He’s bringing back guts.”

Nights like this are one of the many reasons why I love fights. Weird shit happens when people punch each other in the head. Most of the time when people ask me “who is going to win?” I say, “I don’t know. That’s why we have to see them fight.” I say that because I’m being honest. There are windows in time where you’re convinced you know the outcome. Where a king has lain waste to all who challenge his dominance, and you’re SURE he’s going to win a fight. Then, someone like @andy_destroyer13 comes along and flips the whole thing right on its fucking head and shocks the world. I LOVE shit like that. Congrats to @andy_destroyer13 on an amazing victory.

Rogan said he didn’t watch the fight live because he was out to dinner, but he was alerted to the huge upset win by a text from former UFC fighter Brendan Schaub.
“I was like, ‘No!’ I go, ‘What happened?’ He [Schaub] says he got f***** up in the seventh round,” Rogan said. “I was happy, I couldn’t wait to come home and watch it. I love when crazy s*** happens.
“This is my favourite thing in fights. Look at Ruiz – no disrespect champ, he jokes about it too. Look at his body. He looks like a regular dude. He’s got muscles under there, he’s just got some body fat on him.”

Joshua was heavily favoured to win on his US debut, with many criticising him for not earlier agreeing to a mega-money title unification fight against Deontay Wilder. That now looks to have gone out of the window, but Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, said they have agreed a rematch with Ruiz for around November or December.
Rogan thinks Ruiz’s win has positives for the heavyweight division, though. “Andy Ruiz is what America needs right now with all this border wall crisis s***,” Rogan said.
“A heavyweight champion that’s Mexican, come on son, and one that’s good and one that has a big belly, he knocks out a dude who looks like he’s chiselled out of granite?

“I mean no one has ever had a better body than Anthony Joshua, what is he, six foot seven? My god, Anthony Joshua is one of the best built heavyweight boxers of all time. He’s a monster. He’s gigantic.
“Andy Ruiz looked short in that fight, and he’s 6’2, he just looks tiny standing next to Joshua. Joshua’s a giant of a man. Jacked. He’s 249lbs.
Rogan added: “He’s [Ruiz] super friendly, too. He told his mom after the fight we don’t have to suffer any more, it’s changed their lives.”
